Trend Must Have Item: Tote Bag

Tote bags did not receive their name until the twentieth century, while bags (for carrying objects) in general are thought to have existed from the 17th century. The tote bag craze began in the United States in the 1940s, with the release of L.L. Bean's Boat Bag (1944). People quickly began preferring totes over heavier luggage due to the ease of carrying, vast storage, and little upkeep. Tote bags found their way into mainstream society in the 1950s, mostly as everyday handbags for women.

Tote bags are incredibly useful for everyday uses. They are comfortable and spacious and come in a wide variety of styles that can be worn with any outfit. Tote bags are often larger and more sturdy than other types of bags. It is far preferable to have one of these bags rather than a bunch of small ones that are easily misplaced or wear out prematurely.

There are numerous origin stories for the tote bag, one of which took place in Paris in the 1860s. The luggage industry grew in tandem with the expansion of travel. It was created largely in leather as a robust medium for storing and transporting valuables or journey beddings for those traveling for work. Totes of all sizes and materials began to appear soon after, making their way into mainstream society.

The design and creation of the ice bag by L.L. Bean was responsible for bringing the tote obsession into the current day. The robust canvas ice carrier from L.L. Bean, a well-known Maine-based outdoor retailer, enables consumers to move ice from vehicles to their homes (for replacing ice blocks in refrigerators). In the 1960s, L.L. Bean revived the canvas ice bag with an improved version dubbed the boat and tote. Colorful trims were used to brighten up older plain designs, which are still used in modern designs. During this time, the tote bag began to gain popularity and was no longer merely a useful bag. Tote bags began to evolve from a daily bag to a vivid, trendy statement in the 1960s.

Tote bags were all the rage in America and around the world at the time. Fashion and self-expression are becoming more important than ever. In 2014, The New Yorker began providing complimentary tote bags to its members. The tote bag is the most adaptable of all bag styles. The original functionality have remained consistent, but there are now countless styles and designs to complement everything from daily office work to exquisite evening feasts. Tote bags are still active and practical in today's world. People from different walks of life use it all over the world.
